River boat trips have repeatedly inspired artists to create masterpieces. Konstantin Korovin was no exception, portraying himself in a boat in the company of a beautiful lady - sister-in-law of his friend, artist Polenov.

Those who have been to these parts on the Klyazma River, and the action took place in Zhukovka, must have been fascinated by the local landscapes more than once. This is the near Moscow region, the modern city of Korolev, in which these protected places have so far remained virtually untouched. Here, today, although rare, you can meet people riding a boat in the water. But artists on these shores appear often.

Just like in the picture, green overhangs the water here, and you can hide in its shadow. The characters of the canvas did exactly that. The young man reads the book aloud, and the girl listens attentively to him, very emotionally reacting to what she learns from the book. The heroine even tugs at her fingers with a rope, in all likelihood intended to moor their light ship.

The girl has a light blouse and a white scarf, and this makes her the main focus of the picture, which is generally sustained in dark colors. River water, which does not get sunlight, seems almost black, if not for the green reflected in it.

The young man is wearing black trousers and a brown jacket, next to him is a hat, also dark, and the book in his hands is another bright accent of the picture. The conflict is just contained in it, in its narrative, but the couple reading the book looks like a whole. Both people are embraced by the same experiences. A beautiful summer day contrasts with them, as if a boat separates the lovers from everything else.

So it was planned on purpose or the artist felt this complex conflict intuitively, it is now unlikely to be able to find out. But if it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be so many emotions and movements in the picture.
