Initially, the painting was called "Ilya Muromets", written by M.A. Vrubel incredibly fast, within a couple of weeks, with virtually no preliminary sketches and sketches. The shape of the picture was an ordinary traditional rectangle. Pointed at the top in the form of a huge, heavy triangular spear shape, she received later. In general, the most reflective and bold ideas of the artist were reflected in the picture.

Vrubel began to write his “Athlete” from the head of a horse for which he was looking for the desired angle of rotation. A real Russian scrap to match his rider, either subsided under his load and left with his hooves, or she grows out of the bowels of Mother Earth, feeding on her powers, embodying her power. Somewhere far below, not reaching the knees, pine and spruce trees grow, with a dark background, curiously curving, an enchanted forest is visible in the background.

A huge block, like a massive giant mountain, outlines the figure of a Russian hero, which is a single whole with the body of a horse and further - with forests, fields, earth and sky. The clothes traditional for Russian heroes, recognizable by us, organically look in a combination of colors, tones, lines of the general background of the picture. The strong and organically concentrated strength and power of the land and people, full of majestic calm and wisdom.

Facial features were not written out for a specific hero of one of the epics, have general, generalized outlines, are more symbolic than individual. The whole picture is striking in its titanic fantasticness, monstrous power and monumentality. Hyperbolicity is expressed in the very approach to the embodiment of the heroic principle, in the spirituality of nature and the folk creative spirit. The author himself called his work the music of a whole person, which sounds a hymn to his homeland.
